California Auto Insurance Requirements

California auto insurance requirements state that all drivers must carry at least a minimum amount of liability coverage.  The minimum amount of coverage required by law in the state of California is 15/30/5 which means that a driver must have at least $15,000 in liability coverage for bodily injury for a single driver, $30,000 in liability coverage for bodily injury per incident, and $5000 of liability coverage for property damage.

Laws requiring the minimum amount of coverage are in place to protect everyone on the roads.  If you are at fault in an accident your insurance policy will cover the medical bills and property damage that you have caused to the other parties involved.  It also protects you financially.  If you were at fault in an auto accident and did not have insurance you would be liable for any medical bills and property damage.  These types of expenses would be financially devastating to most people but your insurance company assumes financial responsibility up to the dollar amount stated in your policy.

You may wish to carry more coverage than the minimum California auto insurance requirements state.  Liability coverage will only pay for the bills of other parties involved if you are at fault.  If you caused an accident your medical bills and property damage would not be covered unless you have a more comprehensive policy.  For people who drive a newer or more expensive vehicle a more comprehensive plan would be a good idea to protect the large investment of an expensive vehicle.

No matter which type of policy you choose whether it's the minimum allowed by law or a much more comprehensive policy, some time spent comparing the rates of various companies is the key to making sure you're getting the best price.  There are dozens of auto insurance companies for you to choose from and the prices vary substantially from one insurance provider to another.  It's not uncommon for two companies that offer nearly identical coverage options to have prices that are hundreds of dollars apart.  A few minutes spent online comparing prices could save you hundreds of dollars every year off of the cost of your insurance policy.
